One of the most common questions I get is how I take care of my clothes so today I’m sharing a few of my top tips on how I care for my clothing. I’m also sharing my favorite products to use for garment care and keeping my clothes looking their best. You guys know that I like to invest in classic pieces that I can wear season after season, so it’s important for me to use proper garment care to preserve these items in my wardrobe.
First or foremost, always read the labels! I never attempt to wash a garment before reading the label and understanding how to treat the fabric.
Also, I’m giving you my top tips here but not including basic washing methods, as I’m sure many of you already know how to care for different fabrics.
Tip #1
Use a fabric shaver to remove lint and pills from sweaters before washing
I use this fabric shaver from Amazon on my sweaters to remove lint and pilling that collect on my sweaters. However, be cautious when using one because if you apply too much pressure you could cut the fabric. I stretch out my sweaters onto a smooth, flat surface to ensure the fabric doesn’t get caught in the blades.
Tip #2
Add a layer under delicate clothing to prolong wear
I try not to wash delicate fabrics such as wools, silks, and cashmere too often, as washing tends to fade colors and stretches fabrics over time. To help prolong use in between washes, I wear a light layer underneath like this tank or a thermal top. This keeps the fabric off of your skin and in turn the garment won’t need washing as often.
For delicate fabrics such as merino wools and cashmere, I use this wool and cashmere shampoo. It helps keep the yarns soft and preserves the natural lanolin oils. And bonus, the cedar fragrance is moth-repelling, too!
For silks and garments labeled “dry clean only”, I use The Laundress Delicate Wash. It’s extremely gentle and contains enzymes that help break down oils and perspiration. It has a beautiful light, floral scent.
Tip #3
Gently roll garments into a towel to soak up water before laying flat to dry
When I hand wash my delicate garments, I gently roll them into a towel {as I showed in my video here} instead of wringing out the water. It’s pretty self explanatory why it isn’t good to wring out delicate fabrics, but rolling them into a towel helps remove some of the excess water for less drying time.
I use this drying rack which is stackable and folds easily for storage.
Tip #4
Spot treat stains and dirt {ideally right away!}
The best way to prevent stains from setting into clothes is by treating them right away. I use The Laundress Wash & Stain Bar for spots like makeup or to remove the ring around the collars of Matt’s work shirts. It’s a fantastic little bar of soap and a little goes a long way. When I’m in a pinch, I also carry a Tide To-Go Pen in my handbag. I’ve had to use them on several occasions, especially since I wear a lot of white!
Tip #5
Use a mesh bag for washing delicates
When washing delicates, I use mesh bags like these to keep them separate from everything else. This will prevent them from getting caught on other garments or damaged during the washing cycle. I also never dry my bras but instead I reshape any padding and lay them flat to dry.
Tip #6
Keep your whites nice and bright by using a whitening detergent
The majority of my wardrobe is white, therefore I use this whitening detergent by The Laundress on an almost weekly basis. It helps prevent yellowing and doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals that could break down the fabrics over time. It’s also safe to use on colors and helps prevent color fading, too. However, I always wash my whites separately and never with any colors – even if they’re lighter pastels. I also like this bleach alternative when I feel like something needs a little extra whitening boost.
Tip #7
Use a handheld steamer for wrinkles
I prefer using a handheld steamer for wrinkles as it’s much more gentle than ironing, yet still effective. Steamers are also great for travel…I bring one on every photoshoot, too.
Tip #8
Don’t over-wash denim
Denim holds up well between washes so it isn’t necessary to wash them often. I typically wait about 5 wears before washing mine and treat any spots I may get between washes with the stain bar I mentioned above.
Tip #9
Never hang heavy knits and sweaters
This is another self explanatory tip but hanging heavy sweaters will stretch the knit fabric and cause them to lose their shape over time. I fold and store my heavier knits in my dresser.
Tip #10
Clean seasonal garments before storing
Clean seasonal garments before storing to keep them fresh. I like using a fabric spray like this one to deodorize my clothes. You can use this anytime, not just before storing. I love it because it’s nontoxic, too!
