[dropcap custom_class=”big”]As much as I adore living in Florida, the heat and humidity aren’t ideal for the health of my hair. Not to mention that I typically wear my hair curled which involves heat styling…and don’t even get me started on the coloring process! But, I have found a hair care routine that combats the damage my hair undergoes and today I’m sharing my best tips on how to care for your hair this summer.[/dropcap]
Nourish with a Deep Conditioning Hair Mask
I use a deep conditioning hair mask twice a week and my hair drinks it up – especially in the hot, summer months. It’s a must for color treated or bleached hair. I’ve tried several deep conditioning masks but my two favorite masks are the Kerastase Masquintense Fine from their Nutritive collection and L’Oreal’s Everpure Pure Remedy Balm. Both of these hydrate my hair and leave it feeling soft and conditioned without weighing it down.
Use Dry Shampoo Between Washes
Waiting a day or two between washes is extremely helpful for the health of your hair. Not only will this limit the amount of heat tools and styling, but it also helps the natural oils from your scalp distribute throughout your hair, promoting health and growth. Using a dry shampoo will help eliminate the appearance of oils and extend the time between washes. This dry shampoo is my favorite – it removes oil, sweat, and actually cleans your hair without leaving a white, powdery residue.
Eat Healthy + Stay Hydrated
The health of your hair depends largely on what you eat. Healthy fats like avocados, salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds provide omega-3 fatty acids to naturally soften and condition your hair. Spinach and other dark leafy greens such as kale and chard are full of minerals that help strengthen hair follicles. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is essential for keeping your locks {+ skin!} hydrated, especially in the summer.
If you’re blonde…
My go-to shampoo and conditioner for maintaining a light, blonde color is the Bright Blonde collection from Oribe. The violet color diminishes brassy, yellow tones extending the length of time between touch-ups at the salon. They’re extremely moisturizing and also provide UV protection.
