I’ll never forget my first tweed purchase. I was in high school and inspired by an advertisement I saw in Vogue. I can still remember the image in my mind – a gorgeous two-piece black and white tweed suit by Chanel. The model wore a chunky pearl belt that sat very low on her hips à la early 2000’s. And so began the search for my very own tweed suit.
I quickly realized that my hourly wage from my part time job as a hostess/cashier wasn’t enough to afford a tweed suit like the one I saw in Vogue, so I opted for a small tweed handbag I found at our local department store. Not nearly the same but it sparked my love for the fabric and I’ll never forget that first purchase.
Since moving to Florida, I’ve had to get creative with my wardrobe and dressing for each season. It stays fairly warm here year round so I tend to incorporate seasonal elements within my wardrobe. For example, in the fall I’ll opt for textured fabrics like tweed and corduroy but in silhouettes such as dresses or skirts that will still keep me cool.
Nordstrom has tons of amazing tweed dresses right now but this tweed shift dress immediately caught my attention. I fell in love with the velvet tie around the collar and ordered it as soon as I saw it posted on their website. The rich, textured fabric is seasonally appropriate yet the short sleeves and length make it cool enough to wear in our Floridian fall weather. {it’s dipping into the 60’s this weekend!} However, it can be styled for cooler temperatures simply by pairing it with black tights and a coat, like this classic trench.
I love wearing shift dresses because they’re flattering and work appropriate. And good news for my fellow petite friends…this dress is available in petite sizes! I think it fits true to size but if you need to exchange it don’t forget that Nordstrom offers free shipping and free returns for every order!
I found a few other tweed dresses that I love like this fun fit & flare {which is also available in petite sizes!} as well as this sheath style that’d be great for layering with a simple button-up blouse for work.
This dress will be at the top of my packing list for our trip to Connecticut later this month. I’m looking forward to pulling out all of my warmer layers and boots! If you have any recommendations please send them my way since this will be our first time visiting New England.
